Ashtanga Yoga Classes ~ Denver, Colorado
Credit Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, in 1948, with popularizing the ancient system of Ashtanga Yoga.
Ashtanga, which is Sanskrit for “eight-limbed,” follows a set of six series of poses, always done in the same order. Each yoga student progresses at his or her own pace. The typical Ashtanga Yoga work out takes 1-2 hours, and includes a total of 75 poses.
Sun salutations, standing poses, seated poses, inversions, and backbends are all part of the Ashtanga Yoga practice.
Most yoga studios offer Ashtanga classes that are led by an instructor, who typically demonstrates and instructs students in the primary or secondary series of poses (not necessarily the four advanced series). There are also self-led classes at yoga studios, in which, once you know the order of the poses, you can practice at your own pace. While there isn’t yoga instruction, per se, in the self-led classes, you do have access to tips and support from a yoga teacher, as well as the energy and company of other yoga students.
The Eight Limbs of Ashtang include:
•Yama (moral codes)
•Niyama (self-purification and study)
•Asana (posture)
•Pranayama (breath control)
•Pratyahara (sense control)
•Dharana (intention)
•Dhyana (meditation)
•Samadhi (contemplation)
