Hatha Yoga Classes ~ Denver, Colorado

Hatha Yoga is based on yoga positions held in correct alignment and controlled breath, which force your mind to block out the outside world. Hatha is the most common type of yoga in the U.S., and its name comes from a combination of the Sanskrit words “sun” (ha) and “moon” (tha).

Hatha means “force,” and implies the balance between opposite forces, such as masculine and feminine, hot and cold, positive and negative. More than any other type of yoga, Hatha Yoga emphasizes postures, breathing, and meditation. The Hatha Yoga poses are meant to enhance meditation.

Hatha Yoga has been around since the 15th century in India and was introduced as a form of physical purification that could lead to higher meditation.

In the West today, Hatha Yoga is usually practiced through a series of physical exercises known as asanas. Asanas bring purification, controlled breathing, and a calming of the mind. Poise, strength, and balance are taught through the asanas, preparing the mind for meditation that will lead to enlightenment.

Hatha Yoga consists of six limbs, directed toward attaining Samadhi (contemplation): Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, and Samadhi.
