Pilates Classes ~ Denver, Colorado
In Germany, in the early 1900s, Pilates was developed as a fitness system by a gymnast, Joseph Pilates. Pilates used his exercises to rehab veterans returning from World War I. More than 100 years later, 11 million people in the U.S. make Pilates part of their regular discipline, and there are 14,000 Pilates instructors, including hundreds in the Denver metro area.
Pilates exercises focus on:
•alignment (to get the most out of each exercise and to prevent injury)
•breathing (Pilates believed that breathing during the exercise would help circulate blood, which would in turn wake up all the cells in your body and help rid your body of the wastes that cause fatigue)
•concentration (for delicate movements and controlled breathing)
•control (of body movements and breath)
•centering (Pilates referred to the lower back, hips, buttocks, and abdomen as your “powerhouse”)
•precision (each movement in Pilates has a purpose, with all of them combining for a powerful workout)
Joseph Pilates originally designed 34 exercises, all of which could be performed on the floor. Later, he invented Pilates equipment, each with its own set of exercises. Some of the more common types of Pilates equipment in use in Pilates studios today include:
•Reformer
•Cadillac / Trapeze Table
•Wunda Chair
•Ladder Barrel
•Spine Corrector
•Guillotine Tower
•Arm Chair
•Ped-A-Pul
•Foot Corrector
Benefits of pilates include:
•increased strength
•proper alignment and posture
•increased flexibility
•injury rehab
Pilates is offered at many Denver metro area yoga studios, as well as by physical therapists who specialize in injury rehabilitation.
The term “Pilates” has been ruled generic and free for unrestricted use, meaning anyone (trained or untrained) can offer Pilates instruction.
In the Denver metro area, including Wheat Ridge, Arvada, Aurora, Westminster, Brighton, Boulder, Longmont, Broomfield, Lakewood, Centennial, Golden, Downtown Denver, Cherry Creek, Highlands, Littleton, and Englewood, you can find a studio, spa, or gym that offers Pilates.
